The western suburbs' big zoo, 216 acres: the Hamill Family Play Zoo is a zoo within the zoo just for kids under 10, where they can touch animals, play in the mud, and dress up as zookeepers; grown-ups take the kids to see bears, gorillas, and dolphins, and when everyone's tired there's the Motor Safari tram or the carousel.

Admission is about $30/adult, $20/child (3–11), parking $17 (check the website); the Play Zoo, carousel, and tram cost extra, so a bundle is worth it. Get in at 10am opening on weekends; afternoons are crowded and the animals get lazy.
