    Best seasons: Summer

One of New England's loveliest small beaches, where the sand squeaks and sings underfoot and a 2-year-old will drag their feet the whole way to hear it; big rocks at either end for older kids to climb and hunt for crabs, clear but cold water, and lifeguards on duty in summer. The walk from the train station passes through a quiet seaside town.

💡 Tips
Driving is nearly impossible in summer (residents only), so take the Rockport line from North Station, 1 hour, free for kids under 11, and the train itself is part of the fun. Strollers are awkward here, use a carrier and a beach wagon. The town has an ice cream shop. From September there is no fee and few people.
