The road where militia chased the British on the first day of the Revolution in 1775 is now a 5-mile flat gravel trail through farmland, stone walls, and old wooden houses: a 7-year-old can hear stories from interpreters in 18th-century dress and watch a musket demonstration, while a 2-year-old is content running between the meadows and old oaks.

💡 Tips
Strollers work the whole way, and scooters and bikes are even better. From Hartwell Tavern west to the Captain William Smith House and back is about 1.5 miles, with live demonstrations on summer weekends. The visitor center's multimedia show suits older kids. The Patriots' Day reenactment in April draws huge crowds.
