The oldest nature center in the Cook County forest preserves: the little red schoolhouse dates to 1886, the newer exhibit building has turtles, snakes, fish, and an observation beehive, and outside the 1/3-mile White Oak loop along Long John Slough is short enough for a one-year-old, with deer and herons if you're lucky.

💡 Tips
The exhibit building is closed Monday and open until around 4:30pm other days (check the website). The White Oak loop works with a stroller; the 1.9-mile Black Oak loop is wilder dirt trail. Worth a winter visit when there's snow, since it's warm inside.
