An 1,800-acre state park southwest of Dallas: the swim area on Joe Pool Lake is shallow, the old Penn Farm farmstead is open to wander, and a few short trails run through cedar woods — the closest state park day trip.

💡 Tips
No lifeguards at the swim area. Day passes often sell out on peak-season weekends, so reserve ahead on the TPWD website. Pairs with Dogwood Canyon at the foot of the hill for a full day.
