Dallas outings that 5–10 year olds genuinely love
Once kids hit kindergarten the bar moves: exhibits they can operate, hikes with real climbing, actual dinosaur footprints. Every place here gets a perfect 5 for ages 5–10, from downtown science museums to a wildlife park an hour and a half away.
In the city, start with the Perot Museum (race a T. rex) and the rainforest ramp at the Dallas World Aquarium. In Fort Worth's Cultural District the science museum lets kids dig for dinosaur bones, the zoo next door ranks among the best in the country, and the Water Gardens let you walk down into a waterfall. For hikes, Cedar Ridge Preserve and Dogwood Canyon have real hills and views; the Heard sanctuary in McKinney puts life-size animatronic dinosaurs on the trail in fall and winter. The best day of all is the drive to Glen Rose: giraffes put their heads in your car window at Fossil Rim, and the riverbed at Dinosaur Valley has real dinosaur tracks.

💡 Good to know
- Perot and Fort Worth museum tickets add up: watch for discounted evenings, and ask your library about museum passes (Plano and Dallas libraries sometimes lend them).
- Fossil Rim and the state parks require timed or day-pass reservations on busy weekends; you may be turned away at the gate without one.
