The oldest botanic garden in Texas, 120 acres under big shade trees; the koi pond, bridges, and waterfalls of the Japanese Garden are a 2-year-old's favorite (buy a handful of fish food and feed them all afternoon), while older kids explore the rose garden, tropical conservatory, and the BRIT science exhibits.

💡 Tips
Admission is about $12 for adults, under 6 free, check the website. The Japanese Garden is prettiest with fall color and spring cherry blossoms; there are sometimes Japanese festival events on weekends. Pairs with the science museum or Log Cabin Village next door for a full day.
