For 9 days in mid-August the Gaithersburg fairgrounds become Montgomery County's big farm festival: whole barns of cows, pigs, sheep, rabbits, and chickens let kids watch 4-H kids up close caring for their animals, plus pig races, tractor pulls, carnival rides, and a mountain of fried food.

💡 Tips
Daytime is best for little kids, for the animals and farm exhibit halls; the rides get crowded toward evening. Almost no shade, so bring hats and water. The animal barns have hand-washing sinks; always wash after petting.
