George Washington's home is more than an old house: the Pioneer Farm has cows, sheep, pigs, horses, and donkeys, there's a 4-acre vegetable garden and big lawns to run on along the Potomac, the museum has a kids' hands-on area, and in summer there are mules and live demonstrations. Kids 7 and up suddenly get interested in history.

💡 Tips

The mansion has a line and no strollers inside; with a 2-year-old, skip the house and do the farm and gardens. Busy on spring and fall weekends, so arrive at opening. You can come by boat from Old Town Alexandria, a hit with train-and-boat kids.
