Washington DC outings that 5–10 year olds genuinely love
Once kids hit kindergarten the bar moves: hands-on exhibits, hikes with rocks to scramble, cockpits to sit in. These places all rate a 5 for ages 5–10, from a real space shuttle to a railroad roundhouse to the rocks along the Potomac.
DC's free museums are heaven for this age: Udvar-Hazy in Chantilly has the actual shuttle Discovery, the Natural History Museum on the Mall has the dinosaur hall and butterfly pavilion, Spark!Lab at American History lets 6–12s invent things, and KID Museum in Bethesda hands them real tools. Outdoors, choose the overlooks on both sides of Great Falls, the Billy Goat Trail Section A for ages 6 and up, the little waterfall at Scott's Run, or the summit scramble at Sugarloaf. Farther out: the B&O Railroad Museum and National Aquarium in Baltimore, the farm and riverfront at Mount Vernon, and the giant slides at Cox Farms in fall.

💡 Good to know
- Every Smithsonian is free, but the Air and Space Museum on the Mall and the National Zoo need free timed passes booked ahead; Udvar-Hazy needs no reservation, just a parking fee.
- Billy Goat Section A is no place for a carrier or stroller: a bottle of water each, grippy shoes, and finish before 10am in summer.
