Where to cool off with kids around Washington DC: splash pads, water parks and lake beaches
A DC summer is 90-plus degrees with humidity like a steam room, and there's one way out with kids: water. The good news is the local park systems spend real money on spraygrounds and water parks, and most are either free or around fifteen dollars.
Free first: Yards Park at Navy Yard has a knee-deep canal and fountains surrounded by restaurants, and Lee District Park in Alexandria opens the Our Special Harbor sprayground free all summer, right next to the big Chessie playground. For a few dollars, South Germantown in Boyds and Bohrer Park in Gaithersburg both have shallow water parks with small slides built for little kids, and the Water Mine in Reston is a mining-town water park made for the under-10 crowd. For a real beach, drive an hour to the mountain lake at Greenbrier State Park: clear water, a gentle sandy slope and lifeguards.
