    Best seasons: Summer

A 42-acre man-made lake in the South Mountain hills, with clear water and a sandy beach that slopes gently into the water, which DC-area parents agree makes it the best lake beach for little kids; lifeguards, boat rentals, and shaded lakeside picnic tables mean a whole summer day never gets old.

💡 Tips
Arrive before 9:30am on summer weekends; the park simply closes when it hits capacity. Bring a shade tent, since the beach itself has no shade. Pick either this or Cunningham Falls: Greenbrier has clearer water, Cunningham has the waterfall.
