The best playgrounds around Washington DC
A great playground is more than slides: soft surfacing, separate toddler and big-kid zones, restrooms and shade, and ideally water in summer. This list is chosen on those terms, and many are within ten minutes of home.
Clemyjontri in McLean is the DC area's most famous accessible playground, with soft surfacing, ramped slides and a carousel; Cabin John in Bethesda hides a big playground under the trees with a miniature train next door. Hadley's Playground in Potomac was Montgomery County's first fully accessible playground, South Germantown in Boyds has the castle-themed Adventure Playground plus a summer splash park, and Bohrer Park in Gaithersburg sits beside a water park. Farther afield, Chessie's Big Backyard in Alexandria has a treehouse and a free sprayground, the canal at Yards Park at Navy Yard fills with wading kids all summer, and Blandair in Columbia is the region's newest big playground complex.
