Family hikes and nature walks around Washington DC
These hikes are measured in toddler steps: short loops, flat or gently graded, with the payoff (a waterfall, turtles, airplanes, a beaver dam) arriving before anyone needs carrying. Each place says whether a stroller works or a carrier is the better bet.
For a first hike, the classics are the boardwalk into the marsh at Huntley Meadows, the loop around Theodore Roosevelt Island, or the paved, shaded trail along Sligo Creek. For waterfalls, the overlooks on both sides of Great Falls are a 5-to-10-minute flat walk from the lot, Scott's Run means hopping stones across a creek to a small falls, and the Billy Goat Trail Section A is for ages 6 and up. For lakeside stroller loops, choose Lake Needwood in Rockville, Black Hill in Germantown or Centennial Park in Columbia; go to Riverbend for bluebells in April and take big kids up Sugarloaf for fall color.

💡 Good to know
- One $20 national-park pass covers both sides of Great Falls for 7 days; the lots back up after 10am on weekends, so arrive by 9.
- DC dirt trails turn to mud after rain and the mosquitoes are fierce in summer: keep rain boots, bug spray and a change of clothes in the car. The Potomac is off-limits for wading; the current is deadly.
