Beaches for kids within about an hour of the South Bay
The nearest ocean beaches are about 45 minutes from Sunnyvale, over the hill in Santa Cruz County or on the San Mateo coast. Closer in, two bay beaches with calm, shallow water are perfect for toddlers who just want to wade and dig.
Capitola is a sheltered cove with a shallow creek lagoon, the safest toddler wading spot around. Natural Bridges has tide pools at low tide and monarch butterflies from October to February, and the Santa Cruz Boardwalk pairs the main beach with rides. On the bay side, Coyote Point in San Mateo adds a castle playground and planes landing at SFO overhead, and Crab Cove in Alameda is shallow and warm enough to actually get in.

💡 Good to know
- The Pacific here is cold with strong currents — plan on wading and digging, not swimming.
- Coastal fog is common, even in summer; bring layers when it's hot inland.
