The best playgrounds around the South Bay

Not every playground is worth a drive. These are the ones with something special: all-abilities designs where every kid can play together, fenced toddler areas, shade, restrooms, and enough going on to fill a morning.

The Magical Bridge playgrounds in Sunnyvale, Mountain View and Palo Alto are the local favorites, and Serra Park in Sunnyvale adds a ship theme and a shallow stream. The fully fenced Rotary PlayGarden at Guadalupe River Park in San Jose and Vasona Lake in Los Gatos make easy half-days, while the Koret Playground in Golden Gate Park and the Dennis the Menace Playground in Monterey are worth building a trip around.
