The museum right beside the USS Constitution, admission by donation: the entire second floor is hands-on, where kids climb into a sailor's hammock, haul cannonballs, scrub the deck, and try raising a sail, and a 7-year-old will not come out for an hour; the exhibits downstairs on the naval battles of 1812 suit adults and older kids.

💡 Tips
Board the ship first, then do the museum; the ship is free but adults need ID. The museum is well heated in winter, a rare free indoor option downtown on a rainy or snowy day. The WWII destroyer Cassin Young, also in the Navy Yard, can be boarded in summer.
