Apple picking and pumpkin patches with kids around New York

Mid-September through late October is when New Yorkers drive out of the city: for apples, pumpkins, corn mazes and hayrides. These farms were chosen with small kids in mind: low trees, a kid-sized maze, animals to pet, and about an hour's drive at most.

To stay in the city, Queens County Farm is the last working farm in New York City, with a corn maze and pumpkin patch on fall weekends and free admission otherwise. Forty minutes over the GW Bridge, Demarest Farms is the closest apple orchard to the city, with mandatory online tickets; another hour west, Alstede Farms is the full package: apples, pumpkins, animals and a little train on one ticket. For animals without the picking, Stone Barns and the free Muscoot Farm in Westchester are open on weekends.
