Houston families' stand-in for a national park: the 40 Acre Lake loop is a flat 1.2-mile gravel path with wild alligators lying motionless on the bank, the observation tower looks over herons and spoonbills across the whole lake, and the nature center lets kids touch alligator specimens and see baby gators.

💡 Tips
The alligators are real: stay 30 feet from the water's edge and keep kids close. Spring and fall are best; in summer, early morning only. The George Observatory opens Saturday nights for stargazing (separate tickets). Bring lunch, since nothing is sold in the park.
