The best outings for big kids (6–10) around Houston
Big kids want the real thing: real rockets, real alligators, a real cockpit to climb into, and playgrounds where they make their own decisions. Everything here rates 5 out of 5 for ages 6–10, and most of it works with a younger sibling in tow.
Taking the tram into NASA at Space Center Houston to see mission control is a Houston coming-of-age; the dinosaur hall and butterfly center at HMNS and the flight simulators at the Lone Star Flight Museum are two more science days. Outdoors, count alligators around 40 Acre Lake at Brazos Bend or climb the observation tower at Sheldon Lake. For fun, the Ferris wheel at Kemah Boardwalk, the free Galveston ferry with its dolphins and the Pleasure Pier; in summer the slides at Typhoon Texas, in winter skating at Discovery Green.

💡 Good to know
- Space Center and HMNS each need 4+ hours; bring food, arrive early, and do the tram and the butterfly center first.
- The alligators at Brazos Bend are wild. Agree on 30 feet from the water before you get out of the car, and bring binoculars for the birds.
