Where to take kids on a hot Houston day
From late May to late September Houston is over 95 nearly every day with 70 percent humidity, and the rule with kids is simple: outside before 10am, then water or air conditioning. Everything here has water, deep shade or AC, and it's what we actually do all summer.
Free water first: the Gateway Fountain at Discovery Green, the splash pads at Pearland's Independence Park and Rob Fleming Park in The Woodlands, and the free indoor pool at Mary Jo Peckham Park in Katy. For a full day in the water, Typhoon Texas or the Galveston beaches. For early-morning outdoors, pick the deepest shade: the Houston Arboretum, Jesse Jones Park, Mercer Botanic Gardens. After noon it's the Children's Museum, the Downtown Aquarium, HMNS, a library, or a winter afternoon at the Galleria or Memorial City ice rink.

💡 Good to know
- Keep swim diapers, a change of clothes, towels, water and sunscreen in the car. Playground metal and plastic burn at midday; touch it before your kid does.
- When the heat index passes 105, Houston issues heat warnings; on those days keep toddlers home or at the library.
