Houston summers with kids: where to get wet and where to cool off
From late May through September Houston runs 95 degrees with the humidity to match. Outdoors is for before 10am; the rest of the day is either in water or in air conditioning. This list is ordered that way: free water first, then paid water, then the coldest indoor places.
Free water first: the Gateway Fountain at Discovery Green downtown, the splash pad at Pearland's Independence Park, a genuinely free indoor pool at Mary Jo Peckham Park in Katy, and the splash pad under the pines at Rob Fleming Park in The Woodlands. For a whole day, Typhoon Texas in Katy, or Stewart Beach in Galveston with the Pleasure Pier after 4pm. When it's simply too hot, FlowWorks at the Children's Museum gets kids soaked indoors, and the Galleria ice rink is a taste of winter in July.

💡 Good to know
- Keep swim diapers, a change of clothes, towels and sunscreen in the car all summer; the Texas sun burns in 20 minutes.
- Splash pads mostly open at 10am. Weekend afternoons are crowded and the water is warm, so go at opening.
- Afternoon thunderstorms appear from nowhere in summer; every outdoor plan needs an indoor plan B.
