Free outings with kids around Houston
Houston is one of the cheapest big cities in America for kids: the best city parks and gardens are free, the county nature centers (Precincts 3 and 4) don't charge admission, and there's a free ferry with dolphins. Parking at everything on this list is free or nearly so.
In Sugar Land, the Cullinan Park observation tower, Oyster Creek Park and the Memorial Park playground cost nothing. In town, Discovery Green, the nature play area at Buffalo Bayou Park and McGovern Centennial Gardens. For animals, the bison and peacocks at Bear Creek Pioneers Park and the live snakes and turtles at Bellaire's Nature Discovery Center; for a museum feel, the pioneer homestead at Jesse Jones Park. One Saturday a month the miniature trains at Zube Park carry passengers free, and the Galveston–Bolivar ferry is a free dolphin cruise. Library storytimes and summer reading challenges are free too.
