Kid-friendly hikes and nature walks around Houston
Houston has no hills, but it has wetlands, bayous, pine forest and alligators. A hike here is a flat boardwalk or gravel loop of a mile or two, with a tower to climb and turtles, herons and the occasional gator to find, and most of it takes a stroller. Each place says whether it's a stroller walk or a carrier hike.
For a first hike, start with the boardwalk at Cullinan Park in Sugar Land, the Shadow Creek Ranch wetlands in Pearland or the lake loop at Memorial Park's Eastern Glades. For alligators, drive 40 minutes to 40 Acre Lake at Brazos Bend; for a climb, the 82-foot tower at Sheldon Lake. Nature center plus trail is the most durable combination: the pioneer homestead at Jesse Jones Park, the bison and old farm at Armand Bayou, the bird feeders at Kleb Woods. In summer, stick to the deepest shade — the Houston Arboretum, Edith L. Moore and the pines of W.G. Jones — and only in the morning.

💡 Good to know
- October to April is hiking season in Houston; in summer, be done by 9am. Carry bug spray year-round, and expect mud on bayou-side dirt trails after rain.
- Any water here may hold an alligator: hold little hands, don't let kids run along the bank, and never feed wildlife.
