Spring with kids around Houston: bluebonnets, azaleas and the gardens
Houston's spring is short but worth planning around: from March to mid-April the weather is the best of the year, the city's gardens bloom all at once, and an hour northwest the pastures along Hwy 290 turn blue with the state flower. Sitting the whole family down in a bluebonnet field for a photo is a Texas rite.
Start with what's free and close: McGovern Centennial Gardens in Hermann Park has a spiral mount to climb and a rose garden, Mercer Botanic Gardens in Spring is the prettiest stroller walk in the north, and Bayou Bend's azaleas peak in March behind a swaying footbridge. For bluebonnets, pick a sunny day and drive to Chappell Hill and Brenham; the Bluebonnet Festival on the second weekend of April has animals and hayrides. Brazos Bend State Park, with its alligators sunning on the banks, is a good stop on the way home.

💡 Good to know
- Bloom timing depends on the weather; check Washington County's wildflower updates before you go. Fire ants live in the fields, so long pants and closed shoes, and stay off private pastures.
- Hwy 290 toward Brenham backs up by mid-morning on April weekends; leave by 9am and stop for Blue Bell ice cream in Brenham on the way back.
- Rodeo season (late February to mid-March) overlaps: the livestock show at NRG Park is the other place to see baby animals.
