A 1,700-acre state pine forest north of The Woodlands and home to the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker: flat sandy paths run beneath towering longleaf pines, two small lakes have turtles, and 7-year-olds can bike or walk a 2-mile loop. The most forest-like place in north Houston.

💡 Tips
Strollers struggle on the sand, so use a carrier or let kids walk. The Sweetleaf Nature Trail is the shortest. Bring water; there's no running water in the woods. Spring mornings are the best time to hear the woodpeckers.
