Summer water with kids around Chicago: Lake Michigan beaches, Crown Fountain and Centennial Beach

Chicago summers are hot, humid and short, and local parents fill June through August with water: Lake Michigan beaches are free with lifeguards, Crown Fountain downtown is a free water plaza, Naperville's quarry pool is minutes away, and the big dunes in Indiana are a day trip.

The easiest day is Centennial Beach: a zero-depth sand entry, lifeguards, and the Riverwalk and ice cream right after. A downtown day starts with the glass towers spitting water at Crown Fountain, moves to the Maggie Daley playground and ends on the Centennial Wheel at Navy Pier; or go straight to North Avenue Beach for sand and skyline. For a longer drive, West Beach at the Indiana Dunes is dune climbing plus swimming, and Santa's Village with its little rides and water park is the summer ritual for northwest-suburban kids 2–8.
